We Hate Plastic... So Here’s What We Do About It ♻️

Who the Hell Are We? Meet the Humans (and Dog) Behind Stoked&Woke Clothing Reading We Hate Plastic... So Here’s What We Do About It ♻️ 4 minutes

We’ve seen first-hand just how messed up the plastic problem is. That’s why we don’t just talk about it, we’ve built our brand around actually doing something about it.

It’s Plastic-Free July, but if you know us, you’ll know this isn’t just a one-month thing. We’re not fans of plastic, especially in the ways it’s overused and ends up polluting our planet 🌍 That’s why we’ve made it a core part of our mission at Stoked&Woke to actively do something about it.

This post isn’t about guilt-tripping you. It’s about sharing why we care, what we’re doing as a brand to make a difference, and how you can get involved in simple ways too.

Back in 2017, Lis and I were riding a scooter through Bali far away from the touristy bits. It was beautiful, until it wasn’t...

We started noticing piles of plastic waste, everywhere.
No real bins. No waste management systems. Just piles of rubbish, mostly plastic, being set on fire. That smoke drifted through the villages. Kids were breathing it in. Families were living in it. It felt devastating to witness, and it burned into our memory, literally and figuratively.

That was one of the moments that stuck with us.
When we later started Stoked&Woke, we knew we couldn’t just sell clothes... we needed to use the brand to stand for something more.

Partnering with Plastic Bank — Turning Trash into Change

We’ve always believed that running a clothing brand means taking responsibility for the planet. That’s why, in the past, we partnered with an incredible NGO called Plastic Bank through the platform Greenspark, which connects businesses with real impact initiatives.

Through that partnership, and with the support of our amazing community, we helped remove over 610,000 plastic bottles from oceans and coastal regions while also supporting people in impoverished communities by turning collected plastic into usable income.

While we’ve now shifted our pledge to planting a tree for every order, that chapter in our journey still means a lot to us and it’s a reminder of what’s possible when a small brand commits to making a big difference.

Removing plastic from our supply chain — for real

It didn’t make sense to support cleanup while adding more plastic into the world through our packaging so we stripped it all out.

  • All our packaging is made from recycled, sustainable materials
  • Our hang tags, string, shipping bags — 100% plastic-free
  • We’re actively reducing plastic wherever possible in our supply chain

Plastic-Free July, our way

To celebrate this month, Lis and I hiked the full 14KM perimeter of our local lake and picked up every single piece of plastic we could find.

What did we find the most of?

Cigarette butts.
Over 100 of them.

Which, friendly reminder, are not biodegradable.
Those filters are made from plastic and will stick around for hundreds (if not thousands) of years.

3 things you can do this month (and beyond)

Look, we’re not here to preach. We’re just two humans trying to do better. If you want to join us this Plastic-Free July, here are three easy wins:

  1. Carry a refillable bottle & coffee cup — they look cooler anyway 😉
  2. Leave no trace when you hike or camp — pick up even what’s not yours
  3. Support brands that give a sh*t — like us and so many others doing their bit

You don’t have to be perfect. Just aware.
We believe small actions multiplied by many people make a big difference.

Wrapping it up...

We’ll always be that brand that loves getting outdoors, having fun, and feeling stoked. But never at the cost of the planet.

So thank you... every purchase, every share, every message helps us push this mission forward. And we’re bloody grateful to have you along for the ride.

Keep living the stoked life - just a little lighter on the planet.
